So, what the hell is this blog all about? Well, basically, Fallout 3. It's been a long time since I've been able to arse myself into writing anything, so I figure that if I'm spending all of my time playing games, I might as well write about them, too.
A large inspiration for this came from another blog (http://livinginoblivion.wordpress.com), and from the vivid recollections of combat told by many folks across forums worldwide. Apparently the combat in this game is pretty fun and dynamic... perfect for my needs.
I should be more specific, though; I'm not going to be writing about the game itself so much as writing from the perspective of the hero as he leaves the vault and takes on his new life in the wasteland. I'll be roleplaying my character, which means a few things:
- Limited carrying capacity: I won't be walking around with thirteen weapons plus thousands of rounds of ammunition, like I do in a normal playthrough. I'm limiting myself to a maximum of three guns plus parts, and ammo will be restricted by its real-world weight and utility. Remember, unless my character knows explicitly that he'll be walking into a warzone, he's not going to outfit himself like a soldier. He's basically a scavenger, and will be armed as such.
5.56mm, 5mm - 300 rounds max
10mm - 200 rounds max
.32 caliber, .44 Mag, .308 - 100 rounds max
12-gauge - 50 rounds max
Energy weapon ammo - 300 max of all energy ammo combined
Grenades, Rockets - 3 of either type, or a combined max of 5 (4 Frag 1 Pulse, 3 Frag 2 Pulse, etc.)
Mines - 2
Mini-nukes - Zero, unless he knows he's going into a big fight. Then maybe one or two.
It should be reiterated that those are the maximum "normal" numbers. If my guy knows that he's wading into a sea of Super Mutant, he's probably going to be a bit better armed than if he was just walking around looking for a quick buck. That being said, he's won't likely be carrying around the maximum number of rounds per weapon in his normal, day-to-day operations.
I mean, think about it. A magazine for an assault rifle in Fallout-land holds 24 rounds, and realistically, would he walk around with ten magazines full of ammo at all times, plus ammo for his other weapons? No, he'd probably have one in the gun and a couple spares. He's not necessarily looking for a fight, he just wants to be able to end one if need be.
- Fights are not mandatory: Let's face it, what man in his right mind would deliberately get into a sniper-battle or firefight - hell, any fight at all - when he could avoid it just as easily? Nobody, that's who. Even if I do need to snipe a few raiders for whatever reason, there's no way I'd stick around if fifteen popped out of nowhere. This character isn't a coward, but he isn't stupid either, and knows when it's best to flee and live to fight another day.
My guy's got to look out for his own neck, and if that means disappointing a few people or failing a quest or two, so be it.
- I will live with my consequences... mostly: What this means is that if I fail something, or someone dies that I didn't want to, or if a particular branch of dialogue wasn't successful... oh well. No save/loading, except in cases of death. And no, this is not an ironman run. I'm not going to call it quits just because I was rocketed by some asshole sentry bot from seventy yards away in the wasteland.
...and with that out of the way, I've only got to actually finish my first playthrough before I begin on my next character. Hopefully this will actually turn out entertaining.
